Course description by Barney Hodes:

What are the steps that you have to take when you sculpt a portrait?

  1. Start with the tools that you need to do the job.
  2. Make an armature that will keep your portrait standing up.
  3. Learn the major planes of the head and how to construct them.
  4. Plug in to information about the anatomical foundation of the face – the skull – and its musculature.
  5. Find out what form concepts apply to the particular face you are working from, and evaluate the relevance of measurements.
  6. Deal with personal elements such as age, physical condition, and familial characteristics.
  7. Balance mass against detail, and work out how the different textures of hair, eyes, lips and cartilage affect the surface of the portrait.
  8. Figure out when you're finished.
