FINE ART BRONZE FOUNDRY TECHNIQUES TAUGHT BY PROFESSIONAL FOUNDERS

IRON CASTING - with "BROOKLYN IRON"

Instructors: Jake Koltz, Michael Dominik, and Matt Crane, original members of 'Brooklyn Iron'
'Brooklyn Iron', established in 1997 is a group of artists who were known to build cupolas (iron melting furnaces) and to pour molten iron in alleys, empty lots and on the sidewalks of Brooklyn to produce their own sculpture. Founding members currently teach iron casting and sand mold techniques at colleges and Universities across the country. They are also professional artists who use iron as an element in their work.

In this class students will produce iron castings of their own pieces or a pattern of their choice. Students will learn to make professional sand molds, help build a cupola (iron furnace), melt and pour iron.

The history and methodology of Iron Casting will be addressed during lectures and in hands-on demonstrations. In this workshop founders will teach step by step methods of the resin bonded sand molding process, which includes sand mold design, muller operation/sand mixing, sand ramming, core washes, glue application, and sprueing techniques. Students in the class will also help build a cupola and learn to operate it to pour their own work.

The class will cover tools and materials with an emphasis on health and safety in the sand and foundry departments.
